Lockheed Martin Research Scientist Senior / Cambridge, MA in Cambridge, Massachusetts

Lockheed Martin Energy Storage is commercializing a new class of flow battery technology for low-cost, grid-scale energy storage. We are seeking a research scientist to assist with the development of novel flow battery electrolyte materials that enable low system cost and high performance. The successful candidate with have significant training in the fields of inorganic chemistry, electrochemistry, and physical methods for molecular characterization. A working knowledge of flow battery technology and incumbent flow battery chemistries is expected. The individual will work closely with a team of chemists and chemical engineers in designing materials that meet battery system cost and performance targets, while also being compatible with high volume chemical manufacture. The individual must be flexible, able to adapt to a fast-paced, dynamic work environment, and able to work as a leader and/or a member of teams and independently. Experience in effectively directing junior team members is expected.

Basic Qualifications • PhD in a field of chemistry or materials science • Significant laboratory experience in the design, synthesis, and characterization of novel molecules or materials • Technical proficiency in electrochemistry and physical methods for molecular characterization (e.g. UV/vis spectroscopy, NMR)

Desired skills • Expert-level understanding of molecular electronic structure properties and structure-function relationships • Experience with metal-ligand coordination compounds and inorganic coordination chemistry • Demonstrated ability to design and synthesize molecules and/or coordination compounds that achieve targeted electronic properties and function • Working knowledge of flow batteries and flow battery chemistries
