Lockheed Martin Mechanical Engineering Lead in Palo Alto, California

The Solar and Astrophysics group at Lockheed Martin Advanced Technology Center (ATC) is seeking a staff mechanical engineer with experience in space flight instrumentation for research based missions to support the GeoCarb program in a lead role. The candidate will have experience in performing and managing the design of space flight hardware preferably payloads or instrumentation. Experience with development, assembly, and integration of space borne imaging instrumentation including NASA or civil space programs is desired. The successful candidate will have experience with portions of the flight hardware development lifecycle including support of major program reviews, development and management of interfaces, and periodic customer reviews. Candidate will have experience with document and configuration management, procurement of flight and non-flight hardware, mechanical ground support equipment development, and development of manufacturing work instructions. Candidate will have strong systems-level background in the development of mechanical and opto-mechanical systems. Candidate must have ability to conceive and develop sophisticated hardware systems, including mechanisms, structures, optical mounts, and thermal control, from requirements definition, through test

Basic Qualifications The candidate will also have knowledge of materials and the mechanical and thermal issues associated with their selection. Experience in generating models and detail drawings using CREO is required. The candidate must be able to communicate effectively with all team members, possess good time management and organizational skills and be willing and able to work in a dynamic and collaborative R&D environment.

• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field • 9 years + Spaceflight hardware design, assembly, and integration experience • CREO model and detail design experience • Experience with drawing release and configuration management • Experience leading a technical team in design or delivery of flight hardware • Experience managing mechanical interfaces between flight hardware • Experience with component or payload level environmental testing to include vibration, shock, and acoustic testing • Experience with contamination control protocols including cleanrooms, clean gas purge, and precision cleaning • Experience with generating specifications and work instructions

Desired skills • Masters degree in a related field • Leadership experience at a team level • Development and integration support of flight instrumentation or payloads • Experience in space borne visible, ultraviolet, and infrared imaging or spectrographic systems • Experience with space flight life cycle reviews including requirements review, design reviews, and test reviews with customer • Management of subcontractors or vendors for development and delivery of flight and non-flight hardware • Coordination of transportation and moves of flight hardware • Mechanical Ground Support Equipment Oversight of development, procurement, and deployment of required Mechanical Ground Support Equipment • Experience with generating Statements of Work, Specifications, and Assembly instructions
