Perform as an optical designer for the Technology Development (TD) directorate of the Advanced Technology Center (ATC). The successful candidate will be a senior designer, working with little supervision, to be able to design optical systems from ultraviolet to infrared using optical ray trace codes, such as Zemax and Code V. Experience with other codes, other than those mentioned, is valuable, but should transferable to these two design tools, at least. The designer is expected to work with the internal customer to get requirements data the designer needs to do a complete design. The designer must be able to do a first order ray trace, and aberration calculation across the field of view, and for a variety of wavelengths. The optical forms we work with are fully reflective, refractive, and catadioptric. The designer should be able to tolerance the design in all six degrees of freedom for each element in case of mechanical deformation, thermal deformation, index of refraction changes with temperature changes, manufacturing errors, alignment errors etc.. The designer will work with opto-mechanical engineers to tolerance the design and balance tolerances through a design iteration process to achieve a buildable design that meets performance and cost goals. In addition the designer should be aware of stray light issues, and methods to control stray light. The designer should be aware of physical optics and diffraction effects, especially as they affect systems working with coherent light, like lasers. Some of our instruments are multispectral, so knowledge and experience with, wavelength dispersive elements and their unique limitations is required. The candidate should be familiar with measurement methodologies and tools such that they can contribute to the planning and verification of optical components and systems. The candidate should be able to acceptably communicate and describe the design to peer reviewers, as well as management, internal and external customers. The designer may be asked to review the designs of others as well.

Basic Qualifications 1-Proven optical Design (Ray Trace) knowledge and experience. Ability to generate optical design drawings and notes with optical mechanical designers. 2-Optical Design Tolerance Analysis due to mechanical loads, thermal effects, manufacturing and alignment errors. 3-Knowledge and experience with manufacturing methods of individual optics, and alignment methods of assemblies, including optical shop testing methods, such as interferometry, and other metrology. 4-Design for manufacturing experience. 5-Work with vendors to negotiate agreements on the design parameters and understanding of design notes. 6-Evaluate vendors proposals as necessary. 7-Ability to incorporate as-built measurements into optical designs and reoptimize alignment plans.
Desired skills 1-Large optics design experience, 2-Space optics design experience, 3-Three Mirror or Four Mirror Anastigmat Experience, 4-Multi-Spectral, Hyperspectral, or Laser Systems design experience 5- Active TS/SCI clearance
