Lockheed Martin Bench Hand Polisher in Stratford, Connecticut

Function

Perform exacting polishing, buffing, burring, rework and touch-up operations on a wide variety of machined parts.

Typical Responsibilities Follow detailed instructions, prescribed procedures, ordinary drawings, operation sheets, specifications and other written or oral instructions.

Perform a variety of routine bench operations to rough and finish burr machined parts, assemble simple components, mark identify parts, prepare parts for subsequent machining operations or processing and other related bench operations.

Use air gun, flexible shaft hand polisher, polishing jack and belt sanders, together with assorted abrasive bob and discs, emery cloth, abrasive stones, rotary files etc., to break sharp edges, form, blend radii, chamfers and polish finished surfaces.

Select and install proper cloth wheel or brush on hand grinder or polishing jack, holding and manipulating part or wheel at correct angle and pressure to remove sharp edge, polish and buff surfaces.

Remove nicks, scratches and imperfections from finished surfaces, blend and polish to correct finish.

Check finish dimensions, finish broken edges, radii, etc.

Exercise care to avoid excessive removal of stock, defacing, or damage to contours or shape of part.

Occasionally use hand tools such as scrapers, files, burring tools, abrasive cloth, etc., to remove nicks, scratches and tool marks.

Break edges, file and finish bevels and radii and polish in confined and difficult areas.

Required to make up rag, felt and similar wheels by building up successive layers of glue and abrasive.

Perform routine and/or repetitive hand drilling operations as required.

Maintain necessary records.

Perform cut off operations on band saw or other related bench duties.

Maintain quality standards by checking work visually and with basic measuring instruments; record data manually or electronically as required.

Perform other related work of a comparable or lower skill level, including part marking.

Follow all rules and regulations pertaining to environmental health and safety.

Refer only unusual conditions to working leader or supervisor.

Perform operator checklist as required.

As required segregate waste material and follow good housekeeping practices.

May be assigned to carry out tasks, not specifically listed, within the scope and skill level of this job description in support of department objectives and to develop individuals’ skills.

Basic Qualifications Requires knowledge of decimals and fractions and ability to read ordinary drawings. Use micrometer, templates, scale and fixed gages. Familiar with the use of files, scrapers, hand or power operated buffers, polishers, drills, and marking instruments. Requires an elementary knowledge of shop practices and scheduling in order to insure checked materials have passed through the proper manufacturing processes.
