Description: The candidate will be required to develop and execute manufacturing process plans for optics component manufacturing, continuously improve processes and plans using tools and methods such as statistical process control (SPC) and design of experiments (DOE), and conceptualize, design and execute tooling requirements using ProE. In addition, the employee will identify cause and corrective action of technical production problems and develop re-work instructions when needed. The candidate will participate in and/or lead process improvement teams and other small project technical teams, and travel in support of business, as needed. The candidate will also support the development of formal operator training courses and may be required to perform OJT training of supervisors, other engineers and operators.
The employee will continuously learn and apply a wide variety of engineering techniques, will contribute to projects in a teaming environment and will investigate, transfer, and adapt processes, techniques, or methods to new applications.
This position requires skills and/or experience in one or more categories of optics manufacturing engineering: optics fabrication, single point diamond turning or thin film coating.
Candidates with thin film coating specialization will have skills, experience and/or course work that includes the design, manufacturing and metrology of optical thin film coatings. Thin film coatings at LM, for UV/visible through IR applications, include broad band anti-flection (BBAR), high reflector, dichroic, and notch filters. The required skills includes knowledge of vacuum systems, physical vapor deposition using thermal resistive and e-beam sources, plasma assist using either reactive ion plating (RIP) or advanced plasma sources and sputtering systems. The candidate must have experience or knowledge of a variety of analytical and metrology techniques for thin film measurement, including in-process metrology, spectrophotometry, ellipsometry, and interferometry.
Candidates with optics fabrication or single point diamond turning specialization will have skills, experience and/or course work that includes the design, manufacturing and metrology of optical components. The required skills include knowledge of spherical and aspherical surface generating, grinding, polishing, edging, single point diamond turning, profilometry and interferometry.
Ability to troubleshoot problems and develop solutions. Ability to write and perform experiments, record and analyze data. Must have good communication skills and be able to work effectively in a team environment. Must fully embrace and demonstrate Full Spectrum Leadership. The candidate must have Microsoft Office software proficiency and strong analytical skills.
Ability to obtain a U.S. Security Clearance.
Breadth in skills and/or experience across multiple disciplines of optics manufacturing engineering is strongly desired.
Experience working in a production environment with represented and non-represented employees.
Knowledge of relevant military and ISO optical specifications is also strongly desired.
B.S./ M.S. in Mechanical Engineering, Optical Engineering, Materials Science, Optical Engineering, Physics, Chemical Engineering or equivalent experience strongly desired.
