Perform a wide variety of duties involved in the fabrication, assembly, and bonding, trim rework, modification or repair of diversified composite details and assemblies.
Follow prescribed methods and procedures to cut, shape, bond, lay-up, cure, trim and assemble a wide variety of composite components.
Prepare molds, dies, templates, etc., for fabrication process.
Cut to shape and lay-up a variety of materials.
Vacuum bag and cure composite material in oven or autoclave as required.
Select and utilize required templates, hand or machine tools and equipment to trim, bond, repair and/or rework composite components.
Perform a variety of operations to drill, ream, countersink, bolt, rivet, etc., as required to fit, align and assemble details and/or components to form desired structure.
Bring assemblies to proper weight and distribution by placement of additional plies or insertion of weights as necessary.
Check work to assure quality standards are maintained.
Perform other related or similar type duties as required, including moving parts and materials around area.
Refer all unusual situations or recurring problems to working leader or supervisor.
As required segregate waste material and follow good housekeeping practices to maintain cleanliness of assigned areas and comply with all EH&S procedures.
Education: Work from ordinary drawings and sketches and use variable measuring instruments such as micrometers and vernier gages. Requires knowledge of arithmetic involving decimals and fractions and its application to the reading of drawings and the use of variable measuring instruments. Requires knowledge of composite manufacturing methods and procedures. Must maintain current certification(s) as required.
Experience: Up to one year.
Initiative & Ingenuity :
Follow prescribed methods and detailed oral or written instructions to lay-up, bond, trim, and repair and/or reconstruct composite components according to specification. Judgment and care required fabricating components according to quality requirements. Decisions are limited in scope and are usually controlled by precedent. Check own work and work of assigned helpers to insure conformance to established quality standards.
Lay-up, trim and work with diversified composite materials, components, and cumbersome mold structures, which may require working in awkward positions. Overall moderate effort.
Mental & Visual Demand:
Continuous mental and visual attention required to perform diversified duties to lay-up laminates, assemble detail parts on molds, to bond, trim, and repair components, and to use proper hand and/or power tools and other equipment.
Responsibility Equipment & Process:
Possible chipped mold cavity as a result of tools dropped on mold surface would necessitate lost time to repair. Probable damage seldom over $200.
Responsibility Material & Product:
Failure to properly lay-up details as identified on mold, incorrect fitting of core material or other details, improper trim of components, etc., could result in scrap or loss time to rework. Probable loss seldom over $200.
Responsibility Safety of Others:
Carelessness in the use of hand or machine tools may cause lost-time injuries to others such as eye injuries from flying particles.
Responsibility Work of Others:
May direct and instruct 1 or 2 others.
Working Conditions Majority of duties performed under usual shop conditions with some exposure to disagreeable elements in minor degree. Vibration of trim tools, abrasive dust considerably alleviated by water routing equipment and down draft tables.
Exposed to possible skin irritation from adhesives or solvents; gloves and other protective equipment available. Possible lost-time injuries due to crushed hand or foot due to handling of fixtures, tools, molds, etc.:
