Lockheed Martin Materials Engineer Senior in Sunnyvale, California
The Lockheed Martin Space Materials & Processes Engineering team is looking for a candidate to develop and implement materials and manufacturing processes used to build spacecraft. This will include establishing requirements, developing and executing test plans, coordinating with other disciplines and customers, and troubleshooting anomalies. Assignments will focus on coatings, thermal control materials, and other non-metallic materials.
The candidate will work on a team with a mix of early career and experienced professionals. Mentoring and professional development will be a focus. This is a great opportunity to get a broad understanding of how Lockheed Martin Space operates.
Part-time assignments on other topics related to materials engineering will be available.
Infrequent travel may be required.
The position requires access to Export Controlled Information and the ability to obtain a security clearance. US Citizenship is required.
Basic Qualifications Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college in Physics, Material Sciences and Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related background or field of study. Familiar with a variety of materials and process engineering disciplines such as paints, coatings, metals, composites, adhesives, bonding, cleaning, failure analysis, and manufacturing operations. Ability to develop test/development plans for new materials and/or processes. Ability to multi-task, handle shifting priorities and timeline pressure to meet project deadlines. Self-starter who can develop solutions to technical issues with only general direction. Ability to perform hand-on activities in R&D and Manufacturing environments.
Desired skills Previous engineering laboratory experience is desired. Knowledge of environmental and operational requirements for materials in space and missile applications (outgassing, flammability, dissimilar metals, stress corrosion, etc.). Experience reviewing engineering drawings and providing guidance to design, stress, and manufacturing engineers. Experience troubleshooting anomalies and performing failure analysis. Experience in a project leadership or technical team lead role. Experience communicating with internal and external customers on a regular basis. Strong writing, presentation, communication and interpersonal skills.
