Lockheed Martin Mechanical Engineer Sr. - Dynamics in Sunnyvale, California

Description: This position is intended to primarily support the IRCPS program, but the successful candidate will be a member of the Loads & Dynamics central functional organization.

'Performs dynamic analyses on missile and spacecraft flight hardware. Produces and maintains dynamic models generated from both in-house and commercially available software codes, that simulate re-entry body and missile segment staging and separation events as well as spacecraft dynamic/separation events. The successful candidate will also perform loads development (primary structure and component level), shock and vibration environments determination and component and system level testing and data evaluation. Works under the direction of multiple lead dynamics analysis engineers with the objective of positioning the selected candidate into a future lead or subject matter expert role. Assists in preparation of test plans; static, separation dynamics, vibration, modal and shock test execution; and post-test reports. Responsibilities may also include being a team member of a product development team, where effective communication is critical.

The candidate is expected to be able to process and analyze flight telemetry data from accelerometers, inertial measurement units as well as other instrumentation used to obtain structural dynamic data. Database management of such data (currently Matlab based) is required. Analysis can also include performance and trend observations that can be quantified using standard statistical methods.

The candidate is expected to know the basics of structural dynamics through education as well as have 5 years of related work experience (with Bachelor's degree--3+ years with Master's degree) in this area, and must be willing to learn and apply new/advanced analytical techniques necessary to perform such analysis. Academic courses must include basic statics and mechanics of materials, or strength of materials, and more advanced dynamics classes. Coursework in separation dynamics and advanced mechanics of materials is preferred. It is desired that the candidate possesses working knowledge of finite element analysis, and coursework or work experience in rigid and flexible body lumped-parameters. Finite element modeling and analysis of missile and reentry system structures is a plus. In addition, the candidate must possess strong communication, both oral and written, interpersonal, and presentation skills.

Works in a multi-disciplined team environment to help with structural design trades, preliminary and detailed design/analysis activity and performance and maintenance assessments of operational systems. Will be required to support designers and other analysts in determining highly producible designs that meet structural dynamic requirements. Will be required to support dynamic test definitions, requirements development, monitoring, data reduction, and comparison to analysis efforts. Prepares test plans and dynamics analysis reports. Interfaces with outside organizations to obtain information necessary to complete the analysis.

Must be willing and able to work occasional extended hours to meet customer schedule requirements. Must be willing to follow work instructions and directions from senior engineers, and work in a team environment. Although this position involves minimal travel, some travel may be required from time to time to support customers including international customers.

Basic Qualifications:

BS/MS degrees from Mechanical, Aerospace Engineering or equivalent/related fields (or equivalent experience). The candidate must possess strong communication, both oral and written, interpersonal, and presentation skills.

Desired Skills:

Course work in basic dynamics (including multi-body / rigid body dynamics and equations of motion), finite element analysis, loads and coupled loads derivation methods, statics, mechanics of materials (strength of materials).Working knowledge of ADAMS, MATLAB and MATHCAD is strongly desired. Working knowledge of NASTRAN, NX, Pro-E/CREO, LINUX and standard Windows software environment desired. Familiarity with programming principles and languages a plus. Familiarity with various forms of testing (static, thermal, acoustics, random vibration, and shock) and digital data acquisition systems including high speed video capture/analysis is a plus.
